About LaoWu Authentic ShangHai Dumpling

Located at 879 US-1, Edison, NJ 08817, LaoWu Authentic ShangHai Dumpling operates as a shanghainese serving Edison in New Jersey. This page gathers the practical details people usually look for before visiting: where it is, how to reach it, when it opens and how customers rate it. Besides its main category, the business also describes itself as dim sum restaurant, restaurant, so it may cover more than the name suggests.

In cities with a Chinatown, weekend mornings bring dim sum carts or order sheets, and lines form early at the most popular spots in Edison; walk-ins are standard and reservations are uncommon outside large banquet restaurants. Regional labels matter: Cantonese, Sichuan, Hunan, Shanghainese and Taiwanese kitchens cook very differently, so a restaurant's stated region is a better guide to the food than the word "Chinese" alone. Some smaller restaurants in New Jersey are BYOB with no corkage fee; call ahead to confirm. A tip of 15-20% is customary for table service but not expected at counter-order takeout. Spice level, MSG and allergen questions are normal to ask before ordering, and most kitchens are happy to leave an ingredient out or tone down the heat if you mention it when ordering rather than after the food arrives.

Hours are published for 6 days a week. On most of those days it is open 11:30 am–9:30 pm. Note that it does not open on Wednesday. Hours in the United States do change around federal holidays and long weekends, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. The listed phone number is (848) 200-7580. Edison is in New Jersey, in the Northeast, where four distinct seasons shape local life: hot humid summers, snowy winters that can close businesses for a day, and a dense pattern of towns where walking, transit and street parking all matter. Getting around Edison is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across New Jersey's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

You have to expect a line out the door because this restaurant is so popular. It is so authentic. And best part it’s SUPER cheap. Portions are so large and most stuff is under 10 bucks. That is just insane for the quality and quantity of food they are giving out. If I were them I would raise the price.

Pictured: 1) pork wontons in peanut sauce 2)juicy pork soup pan fried dumpling 3)crab & pork soup dumpling The food was served piping hot which is essential for soup dumplings. Couldn't taste much of crab in soup dumplings. Peanut wontons were different than expected. Food still very good. The staff were nice and efficient. The dining area is quite small. We went during an off time, no wait but the place was packed. I would expect a wait doing peak times. There is a cash discount.

We drove about 45 minutes to try LaoWu Authentic Shanghai Dumpling, and it was absolutely worth the trip. This is a small, hole-in-the-wall type of spot, but don’t let that fool you—the food is incredibly fresh and packed with authentic flavor. The soup dumplings were some of the best I’ve ever had—perfectly crafted with rich, delicious broth and great texture. Every dish we ordered was outstanding, and we enjoyed it so much that we ended up ordering a ton of food to take home. This isn’t your typical American-style Chinese restaurant—it’s a truly authentic noodle and dumpling spot, and it shows in every bite. If you’re looking for real deal Shanghai-style dumplings and noodles, this place absolutely delivers. We’ll definitely be coming back again.

Amazing comfort food, the salted duck was yum, the steamed crab and pork buns were delicious and the fried pork dumplings were good. The Golden lava was also very tasty. 10/10 would come again to try more items super yummy.

I am Shanghainese, and this place is the best authentic Shanghainese restaurant I’ve ever tasted outside New York City. The food is high quality, authentic, and very reasonably priced. The staff are hardworking and helpful. I’ve been coming here ever since they opened and their excellent taste and quality continue to remain the same. Many of the staff are the same faces I see every time I return as well! The space can sometimes be busy and crowded due to the restaurant’s small size, but not in an uncomfortable way. It’s a very lively and cozy feeling. Lots of times there is a line, especially around lunch and dinner time, so make sure to come early or at off-hours if you want to get ahead of the wait!
